GLASGOW GOLF DAY - 2008

Another Glasgow Golf day at Whitecraigs Golf Club and another day we were blessed with perfect golf weather and of course we get the same old stories from the regulars of ailments and bad form which seem to disappear pretty quickly when the clubs start swinging.

This year’s event was not as well attended as previous years and I would urge the golfers amongst us to try to attend, as it is a splendid day and an opportunity to play a magnificent golf course. Look out on the Glasgow referees website next year for details.

Amongst the usual faces of Alan Ferguson (surely he should be on the seniors tour), the Young Brothers and Stuart Trotter it was good to see Robert McKendrick back amongst us and young referees like Sean Carr taking part for the first time.It should be noted that McKendrick and young Carr were comprehensively beaten in their four ball match against yours truly and Robert Cruickshank despite whippersnapper Carr telling myself that I would “bottle” my putt on the 17th green.

The inexperience of youth although I think his confidence had been high since the first hole when “Car Park Cruickshank” …well need I say more.At the end of the day the Older Young Brother triumphed so congratulations to John. Stuart Trotter finished 2nd and Stewart McLachlan 3rd.

The first three all finished equal on points but Johns superior Inward Half saw him victorious.Nearest The Pin on the 16th was won by Stuart Trotter whose drive I am reliably informed finished two inches inside Robert Cruickshanks effort.

The Longest Drive  on the 18th was won by Willie Young who regained some of the family bragging rights from John. Can I take this opportunity on behalf of the Glasgow Referees Association to thank Stewart McLachlan and Robert Cruickshank for working so hard to organise the golf day and also a big thank you to the members and staff of Whitecraigs Golf Club for their hospitality and use of their facilities.

Finally, although it pains me greatly I have to mention Michael Monaghan’s magnificent approach shot to the 18th green from some 120 yards from the pin Michael’s shot landed three inches from the hole to give him an easy putt for a very impressive Birdie 4 Net Eagle 3.A handicap review for Mr Monaghan is required immediately.

Tommy
