The Glasgow Association has been in existence
since 1945. It is interesting that almost 58 years ago the
decision by the Scottish Football Association to set up Referee
Associations under their umbrella was the foundation on which
FIFA created their referee policy around the world.
The birth of the SFA Referees movement coincided with the
end of the Second World War. Many teams were being formed
and there was a real shortage of qualified referees. Some
referees began their career by chance, having to officiate
because the match official did not appear. Tom "Tiny"
Wharton, Chairman of the SFA Referees committee, Chairman
of the executive referee supervisors and Glasgow member was
one of this group being pressed into service at a league deciding
match between his team and the Rutherglen St Andrews Church
team. Tiny's team lost by 2-1 and it was put to him that he
should consider taking up refereeing. The rest, as they
say, is history....
