Old Firm help put Focus on Football

The Old Firm united to put the focus firmly on football at the September meeting of the Glasgow Association.

Under the theme of Focus on Football, Tommy McIntyre, Head of Celtic’s Professional Academy, and Tommy Wilson – Technical Manager at Rangers Youth Academy – were the special guest speakers at the meeting.  Through slideshow presentations, they discussed their roles and how the development of young talent at both clubs is playing an important part for the future.

However, it isn’t just the on-field development of the players which is a key part of the coaching system at both clubs, with both representatives preaching similar messages about the importance of education and how the young players conduct themselves away from the pitch.  This includes the dietary requirements and fitness plans.  With a similar ethic in place at the SFA – individual development plans and focus on fitness thanks to the work of Graeme Jones and John McQuade, the presentation gave members the chance to see how the two biggest clubs in the country approach an important topic.”

Both Tommy’s also explained the importance of respect as well, particularly towards match officials, with players discouraged from showing dissent, especially as the youth games provide an opportunity for young referees who are starting out in the game to develop as well.

The pair concluded what was a hugely successful presentation with a question and answer session before taking part in a photoshoot with some of the Association’s rising young referees.

Association President Stevie O’Reilly said: “We were delighted that both sides of the Old Firm came together to participate at the meeting.  It was a huge success and I would like to pass on my thanks to both Tommy’s. There is a strong ‘focus on football’ campaign within the Scottish game at the moment, whether you are coaching, playing or refereeing and I am delighted such prominent figures from our leading clubs were able to endorse this in such a positive way.”
